Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne has pointed out that Sri Lankan Agri scientists have discovered new varieties of paddy that can produce 12,000 kilograms of paddy per hectare.

The Minister emphasised that with this discovery, paddy cultivation in the country will definitely hit new levels.

Pointing out that these new varieties can produce a larger yield than the current yield from two and a half acres, the Minister expressed that in the future, paddy production will not be limited to rice production.

Commenting on the multiple uses of paddy, he noted that it can also be used to feed animals, produce beer and substitute for bread flour.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister highlighted the need to transform Sri Lanka’s paddy production into a process aimed at the international market.

He requested three to four seasons for this transition.
