Around 15,000 vehicles still remain unattended to with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles due to a month-long delay in the printing of number plates.

Commissioner general of motor traffic Kamal Amarasinghe said the company that printed the number plates yet again suspended the work on 30 April since a resumption in March over a payment issue.

Therefore, a procurement process is ongoing with 15 companies offering fresh bids, he said.

A technical evaluation committee is examining sample number plates from the bidders, and a new printer will be chosen within the next two months, Amarasinghe said.

Furthermore, there are unclaimed printed number plates piled up in the RMV, he added.
