Sri Lanka has witnessed a significant rise in shooting incidents, with a total of 46 reported cases so far in 2025, according to a statement from the Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manatunga.
During a media briefing held today (May 19), SSP Manatunga revealed that 31 of these shootings are linked to organized crime groups.
The incidents have raised concerns over the increasing influence and activity of criminal gangs across the country.
“Out of the 46 shooting incidents reported, 31 are associated with organized criminal networks,” SSP Manatunga said.
He also highlighted that over 100 suspects have been arrested in connection with these shootings, underscoring the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle the issue.
In addition to arrests, the Police have seized a total of 41 firearms used in these criminal activities. Of these, 27 are pistols, while 14 are T-56 assault rifles.
