A total of 68 shooting incidents have been reported across Sri Lanka in the first seven months of this year, Police Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler revealed today (14).
Speaking at a special press conference held at the Police Media Division auditorium, ASP Wootler said that between January 1 and July 13, 2025, 50 of the shootings were linked to organized criminal networks, while the remaining 18 incidents stemmed from personal disputes.
The surge in gun violence has claimed 37 lives, of which 34 were identified as organized criminals, and left 39 individuals injured, including 30 linked to underworld activities.
Sri Lanka Police have ramped up special operations targeting criminal networks, resulting in the seizure of 23 T-56 assault rifles, 46 pistols, and over 1,100 other locally and foreign-manufactured firearms.
Further, 24 suspected gunmen, 15 getaway drivers, and 150 individuals who aided and abetted the shootings have been taken into custody.
