Widespread adverse weather conditions have affected more than 10,000 people across 14 districts in Sri Lanka, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed on Friday (31).
According to the latest figures, 10,270 individuals from 2,757 families have been impacted by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and localized flooding.
The DMC stated that residents in 140 Divisional Secretariat areas are facing the brunt of the weather, which has also led to the opening of sluice gates in several reservoirs due to rising water levels.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has extended its Level-1 Landslide Early Warning for parts of Galle, Kegalle, Kandy, Ratnapura, and Nuwara Eliya districts.
The warning remains in effect until 4:00 p.m. today (01), with residents in hilly and landslide-prone areas urged to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology announced that the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern part of the island are expected to gradually ease starting today.
However, intermittent showers or thundershowers are still likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts.
Isolated showers may also occur in parts of Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or evening hours.
Additionally, fairly strong winds reaching 30–40 km/h are forecast over the western slopes of the central hills, and in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, along with Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions against strong winds and lightning, particularly during thundershowers, to minimize potential damage and ensure safety.
