Reverend Father Cyril Gamini Fernando, media spokesperson for Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, has called on Deputy Minister of State Security, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), to resign immediately and clear his name amid mounting criticism over his role during the 2019 Easter attacks.
Speaking to an online news channel, Rev. Fr. Fernando urged Jayasekara to step down from his ministerial position as a demonstration of accountability and to allow an impartial investigation to proceed.
Disclosures in Parliament revealed that Major General Jayasekara was serving as Eastern Commander at the time of the attacks. His appointment reportedly coincided with efforts by a faction, including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to consolidate power within the military hierarchy.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Nizam Kariyapper condemned Jayasekara’s actions, asserting that he cannot evade responsibility given new revelations that a group of army officers under his command allegedly obstructed efforts to prevent the attacks and were involved in destroying critical evidence.
