Sri Lanka’s state-run Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation warned on Wednesday that production of traditional medicines has been severely disrupted by a shortage of key medicinal plants, with even registered suppliers unable to meet demand.
Chairperson Geethamani C. Karunarathne said the corporation, which manufactures Ayurvedic medicines for hospitals and public dispensaries nationwide, relies on approved suppliers to provide fresh and dried raw materials each year.
However, many of those suppliers are now failing to deliver several essential ingredients.
“The medicinal plant varieties currently in shortage include aloe vera, kiratha, fresh hathawariya and fresh wela leaves. What we particularly need right now is fresh wela,” Karunarathne said.
She appealed to individuals capable of supplying the required plants to contact the corporation, adding that officials would verify quality standards before making any purchases.
