The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has urged patients and the public to come forward with information related to neurosurgical procedures performed under the supervision of Specialist Neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Surasinghe Wijeratne at the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital.
In a statement, the Commission said it is currently investigating multiple allegations, including the use of EVD and VP shunt surgical instruments sourced from external parties, which are believed to have caused both physical harm and financial loss to patients.
Statements have already been recorded from approximately 77 individuals allegedly affected by such procedures.
This follows the recent arrest of Dr. Wijeratne and two others by the Commission.
She has been remanded until June 24 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, over accusations of selling medicines at inflated prices via her private medical institution, bypassing government hospital procurement processes. The alleged scheme has reportedly resulted in losses exceeding Rs. 30 million.
