Sri Lanka’s top anti-corruption body has announced an investigation into the alleged procurement of expired medical reagents worth Rs 2,500 million for the National Hospital in Colombo.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) confirmed its decision in a written communication earlier this month to the Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association of Doctors (MCPA), following a complaint by the association’s president, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa.
The complaint centres on claims that large volumes of medical reagents, some of which were reportedly expired, were procured and misused over an extended period.
Allegations also include the purchase of equipment and supplies exclusively from a single supplier.
According to informed sources, the investigation is expected to focus on several high-ranking individuals, including the current Health Secretary, the former Deputy Director General of the National Hospital, as well as senior medical professionals and laboratory technicians.
Dr. Sanjeewa has also lodged a separate complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which has begun recording preliminary evidence.
However, the MCPA has raised concerns over delays in both investigative processes.
