Chamal Rajapaksa likely to be arrested over alleged fraudulent compensation claim

Chamal Rajapaksa, a former minister and senior member of the Rajapaksa family, is listed to be questioned by the police in the coming days, over allegations that he fraudulently obtained Rs. 15,022,600 from the government by providing false information claiming his residence was destroyed by arson during the 2022 public uprising.

Police sources said Rajapaksa is accused of submitting a false claim stating that his house and property located in Magama, Tissamaharama were set on fire and destroyed on May 9, 2022, during the height of the anti-government protests. Based on this claim, he allegedly received over Rs. 15 million in compensation from the government.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) is expected to question him soon in relation to this fraud allegation.
