Cyber predators thrive as child exploitation cases surge

Sri Lankan police have raised alarm over a surge in online sexual exploitation targeting children and women, with 28 children and 118 women reported as victims of cyber-based abuse so far this year.

Speaking at a press briefing in Colombo, Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said mobile phones and internet access have become key tools used by predators to carry out abuse.

“All forms of sexual exploitation against children are being facilitated through mobile devices,” he said.

Authorities have arrested 114 suspects in connection with these offences in 2025, according to police data.

ASP Wootler also revealed that 206 children have been taken into custody this year in connection with drug-related incidents.

The police are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious online behaviour or abuse involving children or women by calling the emergency hotlines 119 or 118.
