Sri Lanka is witnessing an alarming rise in cybercrime, with around 25 cases reported daily, Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala said.

Responding to a question from MP Rajeevan Jeyachandramoorthy in Parliament yesterday (20), Minister Wijepala highlighted a significant increase in complaints, particularly in the Northern Province.

Official figures show 24 cybercrimes in 2020, rising to 1,539 in 2024, with a total of 2,368 reported by October 31, 2025.

The Minister also said that computer crime sub-units have been established under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at police headquarters across several districts to address the growing threat.
