Cyclone Ditwah has affected an estimated 2.2 million people across Sri Lanka, with 1.7 million severely impacted, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.

The DMC said that at least 644 people have died as a result of the storm as of 5 p.m. Sunday (14).

Search and recovery operations are continuing in areas hit by landslides, where authorities are still retrieving bodies.

The cyclone has displaced 83,361 people, who are currently sheltering in 845 designated safe centers.

Major Gen. (Retd.) Sampath Kotuwegoda, director-general of the DMC, said the disaster has affected about 495,000 families nationwide.

Kotuwegoda said some residents in affected areas have declined to evacuate despite warnings, but authorities do not plan to force people from their homes.

Many of those impacted have instead chosen to stay with relatives in safer locations, he said.
