The man behind visionary and dreamy celluloid pieces like The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Dune, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive and television series such as Twin Peaks passed away at age 78.
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” the statement made by his family yesterday (16) reads. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There is a big hole in the world now that he is no longer with us,” it reads. “It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Lynch, who would have turned 79 on Monday, revealed in August 2024 that he was diagnosed with emphysema.
David Lynch started to marvel at the world with his cinematic vision with the independent surrealist film Eraserhead in 1977. He was considered one of the most important filmmakers of his era. The surrealist, dreamlike worlds he created through his pieces were often praised as visionary creations.
Although Lynch has mainly directed ten movies and four TV series over four decades, he has recorded 60 award wins including a 2020 honorary Academy award, and 85 nominations, including four Academy Awards.
However, even though the world is saddened by his demise, Lynch would say, ‘Keep your eye on the doughnut and not on the hole.’
