MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has questioned claims that the Police were facing a shortage of breathalyser test tubes, raising concerns over whether MPs are being treated differently under the law.
Speaking to reporters, Jayasekara asked whether the law had been applied differently in the case of National People’s Power (NPP) MP Ashoka Ranwala, and whether he was being treated as a “special individual.”
He suggested that if an ordinary citizen had caused a road accident, the required equipment would have been obtained from a nearby Police station and the test conducted without issue.
Jayasekara also criticized the government’s priorities, noting that substantial sums had recently been spent importing large quantities of tear gas.
He described the notion that the Police lacked breathalyser tubes during the incident as “laughable.”
Highlighting the potential public impact, Jayasekara questioned whether it was fair to place blame on ordinary citizens for the shortage at a time when large numbers of people were travelling during the Christmas season.
