Commenting on the recent assassination of the Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha, Deputy Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe said that insecurity is not limited to Pradeshiya Sabhas but is widespread across the country.

However, he reassured that there is currently no direct threat to the general public, who continue to move freely.

Abeysinghe highlighted that the government is implementing a large-scale drug prevention program and has granted the police full freedom to conduct continuous investigations related to this issue.

The Deputy Minister also noted that although criminal gangs linked to the underworld had previously been involved in violent clashes, such incidents have decreased recently.

Nevertheless, he cautioned that some armed underworld groups still operate in the country.

He further said that security is being provided to those who require protection, but clarified that there are insufficient resources to ensure security everywhere.

Abeysinghe added that while it will take time to dismantle the existing underworld networks, the government has taken full responsibility for addressing the issue.
