Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando has categorically dismissed reports suggesting that the President’s expenditure allocation in the 2026 Appropriation Bill has been tripled compared to 2025 figures.

Addressing the controversy, Dr Fernando said the claims were “completely false” and based on incorrect comparisons.

The 2026 Appropriation Bill, which sets out the government’s estimated expenditure for the coming year, was recently presented to Parliament.

It outlines a total government spending estimate of Rs.4.54 trillion.

Within this, the President’s expenditure head is allocated Rs.11.37 billion for 2026, comprising Rs.2.66 billion for recurrent costs and Rs.8.71 billion for capital expenditure.
