The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded statements from the wife and son of suspended police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon, who remains at large despite an open arrest warrant issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.

The family members, during questioning by CID officers, revealed that they were unaware of the police chief’s current location.

CID officials recently visited the family’s residence in Hokandara after receiving information that the wife and son had returned to the house.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court had ordered the arrest of 8 former officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), including suspended police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon, and to name them as suspects in the shooting incident that took place in front of the W15 Hotel in the Pelena area of Weligama, Matara on December 31, 2023.

However, an agreement has been reached between the Attorney General (AG) and the legal counsels of the suspects implicated in the 2023 shooting incident.

The AG issued a special notice yesterday (16) regarding the order to arrest Deshabandu Tennakoon and six other suspects in connection with the incident.

Accordingly, based on the agreement reached, the AG has directed the CID not to arrest the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and five other accused, excluding Deshabandu Tennakoon.
