Disaster relief at risk as Grama Niladhari Officers protest political interference

The Grama Niladhari Officers’ Alliance has warned it may take trade union action if officers continue to face political interference while carrying out disaster relief duties.

President of the Grama Niladhari Officers’ Alliance, Nandana Ranasinghe, said officers are encountering pressure from various political factions as they attempt to independently manage relief distribution and temporary shelters for those affected by recent disasters.

“Reports from our colleagues indicate that certain politicians are interfering with the duties and responsibilities of Grama Niladhari officers. At a time when the entire country is affected by a disaster, we are not prepared to focus on trade union action. However, if any further interference occurs, we will be compelled, though reluctantly, to resort to such action,” he said.

Ranasinghe also stressed that the interference is making it increasingly difficult for officers to manage temporary camps and ensure relief reaches those in need.
