The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has raised alarm over a surge in complaints linked to a WhatsApp scam in which fraudsters attempt to gain access to users’ accounts through fake calls and text messages.
According to the CID, the scammers trick users into revealing their One-Time Password (OTP) — a security code sent to verify identity — which is then used to hijack their WhatsApp accounts and send fraudulent messages, often aimed at extracting money from their contacts.
Authorities have urged the public to remain highly vigilant and to never share OTPs or personal verification codes under any circumstances.
