Adverse weather conditions in Sri Lanka in the recent days have severely impacted vegetable farmers in the Nuwara Eliya District, leaving them in a desperate situation.

Small-scale farmers in areas such as Kandapola, Magasthota, and Shanthipura faced the complete destruction of their farmlands.

In response to this crisis, senior lecturer and Chief Incumbent of the Kotamudungala Rajamaha Viharaya in Bokkawala, Kandy, Ven. Moragaswe Vijitha Thero, sought assistance from Dr. Kwok Shiu Ming, Director of the Hong Kong-based International Centre of Sakyamuni Cultural Limited.

Dr. Kwok, along with other donors from the organisation, initiated a program to provide dry rations to those affected by such emergencies.

Accordingly, with the intervention of Ven. Moragaswe Vijitha Thero, dry food items were distributed to 500 farming families who suffered crop losses in Kandapola, Magasthota, and Shanthipura.

The distribution program was conducted at Mahinda Maha Vidyalaya in Kandapola and Sri Dharmarama Temple in Magasthota, under the guidance of Ven. Dambagolle Somananda Thero (Chief Incumbent of Sri Jinendraramaya, Kandapola), Ven. Udowela Dhammadinna Thero (Chief Incumbent of Sri Dharmaramaya, Magasthota), and Ven. Madugalle Abhayadhamma Thero (Kandy District Organiser of the National Bhikkhu Front).

The events were attended and supported by the Principal of Nuwaraeliya, Kandapola, Mahinda Maha Vidyalaya, K.D.P. Kumari; the Officer-in-Charge of Kandapola Police Station and its officials; Muthubanda of Bokkawala Police Station; and Sena Suriyapperuma of the Suriya Foundation who ensured the successful distribution of the dry rations to the affected families.
