A gazette notification is expected to be issued in the coming days, transferring the authority over the transfer and promotion of senior police officers from the independent National Police Commission to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
If enacted, the change would give the IGP sweeping powers to manage the appointments and careers of senior officers, a responsibility currently vested in an independent body designed to safeguard transparency and insulate the police from political interference.
Civil society activists say the move could compromise the independence of the police force, paving the way for greater politicisation and undermining efforts to uphold professionalism and accountability within the police department.
