Health authorities in Sri Lanka have revealed that an average of 15 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, with three lives lost to the disease.
The Ministry of Health, marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, said breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Sri Lankan women.
Officials stressed that early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of a full recovery.
Women over the age of 20 are being urged to perform regular monthly self-examinations, while those between 20 and 40 are advised to undergo clinical screenings at least once every three years.
Women over 40 should seek annual medical checkups.
The Ministry also urged the public to remain vigilant for early warning signs such as breast lumps, pain, or skin changes and to promptly seek medical attention at government-run Suwanari, Suwadivi, or early cancer detection clinics.
Health officials emphasised that increased awareness, timely screening, and access to early treatment are essential to reducing preventable deaths linked to breast cancer across the country.
