Faiszer urges tougher controls on online gambling

Parliamentarian Faiszer Musthapha has called on the Sri Lankan government to implement stricter measures to regulate online gambling, warning of the growing risk of addiction and revenue loss if the sector remains unchecked.

Speaking during the second reading of the Gambling Regulatory Authority Bill in Parliament on Tuesday (19), Musthapha emphasised the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework tailored to the rise of online gambling platforms.

“While physical casinos have been legitimised and contribute to employment and tourism, online gambling provides no such return to the state unless it is properly regulated,” he said.

Describing the proposed bill as a positive first step, Musthapha stressed the importance of updating laws to reflect emerging trends in the gambling sector.

He cautioned that without a holistic approach, the government risks missing out on potential revenue and allowing unregulated platforms to proliferate unchecked.
