Farmers face devastating losses as mystery disease threatens to decimate paddy crops

Farmers in Maha Bulankulama, Anuradhapura, are facing the imminent destruction of around 10 acres of paddy cultivation due to an unidentified disease that has affected their crops at a critical stage.

According to the farmers, their paddy plants were healthy up to the flowering stage, but have since turned white, with grains shriveling and drying prematurely.

Despite efforts to combat the issue using pesticides and treatments aimed at common pests such as stem borers, gall midge, and fungal infections, none have been effective.

The affected fields, irrigated by the Mahabulankulama tank and spread across areas including Mahawela and Dangassa, are showing widespread damage.

Farmers estimate that yields will fall drastically, likely producing less than 25 bushels per acre — far below expectations.

The farming community has called on the government for urgent intervention and fair compensation to mitigate the financial impact of the crop losses.
