The Attorney General yesterday (25) filed indictments against former national cricketer Sachithra Senanayake on charges of aiding and abetting match-fixing.

The charges were filed before Hambantota High Court Judge D.P. Mudunkotuwa.

This marks the first time a national-level cricketer has been prosecuted under the country’s new Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act.

After the indictments were filed, the court ordered Senanayake’s release on two surety bails of Rs.1 million each, provided by two close relatives.

He was also ordered to provide his fingerprints.

The case has been scheduled for further hearing on November 27.

According to the indictment, Senanayake is accused of attempting to influence the result of a 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) match between November 21 and 22.

He allegedly solicited, enticed, and provided instructions to Colombo Kings player Tharindu Ratnayake to not report a match-fixing proposal he had received.
