The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) yesterday accused the ruling JVP-led National People’s Power (NPP) of storming and seizing its office in Yakkala, Gampaha District, in a violent confrontation early on 2 September.
FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda told a media briefing that a group described as “government-backed thugs” forcibly entered the party’s premises at Salmal Uyana, Kirindiwela Road, around 6 a.m., assaulted members, and evicted them before taking control.
Six FSP members were injured and required hospitalisation.
Jayagoda insisted the office had been the party’s political and union base since 2011, with all documentation proving their continuous occupation for over 13 years.
He accused senior government officials, including Public Security Minister Ananda Wijayapala and regional deputy ministers, of using state power and police backing to secure the premises for the NPP.
“The President boasts of restoring the rule of law, but this incident exposes a very different reality,” Jayagoda said.
Police have cordoned off the building, deploying officers from multiple stations. The FSP has lodged a formal complaint over the incident.
FSP Propoganda Secretary Duminda Nagamuwa blamed “government-sponsored thugs” and stated the party is willing to comply with any lawful court order.
However, he stressed the NPP was “neither the court nor the Fiscal Officer.”
FSP Central Committee member Sujith Kuruwita condemned the takeover as a “shameful act by the government,” noting the office’s significance as the party’s district headquarters for over a decade.
Nagamuwa further criticised the NPP for failing to reclaim properties seized by the United National Party (UNP), including the site of the ‘Sirikotha’ party headquarters, while allegedly using state machinery to suppress the FSP instead.
