The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned that Sri Lanka’s free health and patient treatment services are in serious jeopardy due to what it described as the authoritarian conduct of the Health Ministry.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday (29), GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Hansamal Weerasuriya said repeated attempts to resolve pressing issues through negotiations with ministry officials had failed, forcing the union to consider strong trade union action if the current stance continues.
“The Health Ministry has yet to respond positively to our calls for dialogue. If this deadlock persists, the GMOA will have no choice but to take firm action to safeguard the rights of doctors and protect the country’s health system,” Dr. Weerasuriya told reporters.
Meanwhile, GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa accused the ministry of sabotaging public health services through its mismanagement and disregard for professional input.
He stressed that the Health Ministry must take full responsibility for any disruptions that result from union measures.
The GMOA’s latest warning comes amid growing tensions between medical professionals and health authorities, with the union alleging that administrative decisions have severely affected hospital operations, patient care, and the stability of Sri Lanka’s free healthcare system.
