The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has raised serious concerns over a critical shortage of essential medicines at the central drug store, warning that the situation is deteriorating and placing patients’ lives at increasing risk.

According to the GMOA, at least 180 essential drugs are currently unavailable at the central pharmaceutical repository.

These include vital medications such as painkillers, antibiotics, and drugs used to manage chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease.

Noting that the shortage is not limited to central stocks, the GMOA further revealed that more than 50 of these essential drugs are also unavailable at government hospitals, severely disrupting day-to-day patient care and treatment regimens.

Of particular concern is the ongoing scarcity of a critical cancer medication, which has reportedly been in short supply for several months.
