Govt sets conditions for talks with striking postal workers

The government has ruled out negotiations with striking postal workers unless their trade unions first accept two controversial new regulations—mandatory fingerprint attendance and revised overtime allowances.

Speaking at today’s weekly Cabinet media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa said that the government is ready to engage in dialogue, but only after the unions agree to the decisions already made.

“Objections to the fingerprint system are largely being driven by groups with varying political interests. Those unwilling to comply with the new procedures are free to seek alternative employment,” he added.

The strike launched by postal trade unions continues for a second consecutive day today (19).

Postal trade unions have affirmed their decision to continue the strike without interruption.

Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara said that a significant backlog of mail has been observed mainly at the Central Mail Exchange in Colombo due to the ongoing strike.
