Police have confirmed that the gunman responsible for the fatal shooting of organized crime figure, Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, also known as “Ganemulla Sanjeewa,” inside a court complex this morning (19) was disguised as a lawyer.

The shooting occurred at the Aluthkade No.5 Magistrate’s Court complex, where Sanjeewa had been brought under guard for a court hearing.

Police spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga revealed that the assailant, who was dressed as a lawyer, used a revolver in the attack, which has since been recovered from the court complex.

However, the gunman managed to escape the scene, and police have launched an operation in the area to track him down.

Despite being rushed to the Colombo National Hospital in critical condition, “Ganemulla Sanjeewa” later died from his injuries.

The notorious drug trafficker and underworld figure had been apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport on September 13, 2023, upon his return from Nepal.

Police had secured a 90-day detention order against him under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and was transferred to Boossa Prison in June 2024 by the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court.
