Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has announced that Sri Lankan specialist doctors who have migrated overseas will be reinstated to their original positions with full service benefits if they choose to return to serve in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a meeting of doctors organized by the Sri Lanka High Commission in the UK during his recent visit, Dr. Jayatissa said that the country is currently facing a shortage of specialist doctors.

He noted that the expertise of locally trained medical professionals is vital to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system during this critical period.

The Minister highlighted that producing a specialist doctor in Sri Lanka requires significant time, resources, and commitment, especially given the nation’s current economic and social challenges.

He urged Sri Lankan doctors abroad to “serve their motherland” and contribute their skills to the national health service.

Reiterating the government’s support, Dr. Jayatissa assured that returning specialists would be reinstated to their respective grades and provided with all necessary facilities to continue their professional service in Sri Lanka.
