The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has placed full responsibility on the Health Ministry for the ongoing shortage of essential medicines, surgical tools, and diagnostic equipment in hospitals across the country.

Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (14), GMOA Media Spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe stated that the crisis extends far beyond the lack of pharmaceuticals.

He said shortages are also affecting surgical instruments, laboratory tools, and equipment used in X-ray diagnostics, thereby disrupting routine medical services.

“This is not an isolated issue. It is a system-wide crisis affecting the entire hospital network,” Dr. Wijesinghe asserted, noting that even the Minister of Health has publicly acknowledged the scale of the problem.

He warned that if patients suffer due to these deficiencies, the Ministry of Health must bear full responsibility.

The GMOA has repeatedly called for urgent and sustained action to address procurement inefficiencies and restore uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
