Torrential rains that lashed Colombo yesterday caused widespread flooding across multiple city areas, bringing daily activities to a standstill and exposing critical issues in urban infrastructure and waste management.
Residents reported rising floodwaters laden with floating debris, including plastics and other waste materials, raising serious concerns about the ongoing problem of improper waste disposal and its impact on the city’s drainage systems.
In several neighborhoods, parked vehicles were submerged under nearly a foot of water, adding to the challenges faced by commuters and local residents trying to navigate the flooded streets.
Residents noted that locked drains clogged with garbage and waste were the primary reason for the rainwater overflow.
They stressed that the failure to maintain and regularly clean these drainage networks significantly worsened the flooding situation.
They have also called for urgent intervention and effective maintenance by municipal authorities to address drainage blockages and improve waste management practices, which are essential to preventing future flood-related disruptions in Colombo.
