Around 30,000 power outages have been reported across Sri Lanka as heavy rains and strong winds continue to batter the island, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said on Sunday.
CEB Spokesman Dhammike Wimalaratne said the majority of outages were caused by trees falling onto power lines amid severe weather conditions, which have persisted over several days.
The situation is further complicated by ongoing industrial action within the CEB. Trade unions have launched a work-to-rule campaign, potentially affecting the speed of restoration efforts.
Prabath Priyantha, General Secretary of the CEB Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya, acknowledged that the union action may lead to delays in reconnecting affected areas.
However, CEB Chairman Udayanga Hemapala assured the public that restoration work is progressing without disruption and that teams are being deployed as needed.
