India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant will be deployed to assist Sri Lanka’s flood rescue and relief operations as the country continues to battle severe weather triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, defence officials said Friday.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence confirmed that a formal request was made for the carrier’s aircraft to support emergency response efforts, particularly in areas hit hardest after the storm made landfall in the eastern Trincomalee region.

INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, had docked in Colombo on November 25 for a port call ahead of the International Fleet Review 2025, scheduled for November 30.

The carrier has already donated 4.5 tons of food supplies and a further two tons of relief items, including tents, electric torches and charging cables, to support flood-affected communities.
