The Irrigation Department has issued a major flood warning for low-lying areas along the Kalu Ganga Basin, warning that significant flooding is likely within the next few hours as heavy rainfall continues across the region.

Officials said water level data from hydrological gauging stations in the basin show a rapid rise, driven by persistent rain in the upper catchment.

The Irrigation Department warned that the situation could escalate quickly, posing a serious risk to communities in downstream floodplains.

Areas expected to be affected include the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama and Elapatha in the Ratnapura District, as well as Kalutara, Ingiriya, Horana, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, Madurawala and Agalawatta in the Kalutara District.

Residents, motorists and passengers travelling through these regions were urged to remain highly vigilant and take immediate precautions to protect life and property.

Disaster management authorities have been asked to implement necessary response measures as conditions develop.
