Several teachers’ unions walked out in protest from an Education Ministry briefing on proposed educational reforms, chaired by subject minister, prime minister Harini Amarasuriya.

Tensions flared at the meeting for TUs and officials, and Joseph Stalin’s CTU was among those who walked out.

The PM concluded the meeting by saying the talks would continue and the stakeholders would be given content of the proposed reforms.

Later, Stalin told journalists that it was meaningless to discuss reforms in the absence of any document.

He also strongly objected to the president’s warning that certain schools would have to be closed down, questioning if the incumbent regime continues with the reforms initiated in 2018.
