At a time when Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is currently experiencing rapid growth, the escalation of crime in recent weeks is directly affecting the tourism industry, says Sameera Senaka de Silva, Secretary of the All Ceylon Small and Medium-Scale Tourism Entrepreneurs’ Association.
Speaking at a press briefing in Galle, he said;
“When a situation is created where it is impossible to walk on a road, there is a risk of tourists coming to this country being affected. Just as there is a boom in the tourism industry, some unfortunate incidents have occurred. Problems arise when tourists are injured and when thefts occur. Also, if this wave of shootings and killings is not curbed, we may encounter obstacles. The relevant authorities must focus their attention on this matter. Additional measures must be taken to ensure the safety of tourists,” he said.
