Local vehicle market hit by cyclone Ditwah

The local vehicle market has been hit by crisis as a result of the impact of cyclone Ditwah, importers say.

Therefore, they request authorities to grant them a concession with regard to the fine they are required to pay in the event of failure to register vehicles within 90 days of importing.

They point out that people would have diverted the money they had intended to use for buying vehicles on emergency needs following the extreme weather-related incidents.

According to them, vehicle sales had suffered a notable setback since 27 November when the cyclone started the devastation.

The fine for failing to register within three months ranges between Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 1.5 million, with the figure stands at Rs. 200,000 for an Alto and Rs. 400,000 for a Honda Vezel.

Vehicle sales had normalized since the import restrictions had been lifted after five years and the prices have stabilized too, say importers.

Department of Motor Traffic statistics show a decline in brand-new and reconditioned vehicle registrations for the second consecutive month in November 2025.
