Sri Lanka will return only the refundable portion of financial deposits made by the Adani Group for the now-stalled Mannar Wind Power project, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said this week, amid growing speculation over possible compensation demands by the Indian conglomerate.
Addressing the media at the Government Information Department on 15 August, Minister Jayakody clarified that while deposits had been placed with the Sustainable Energy Authority, the government’s financial obligation is strictly limited to those sums deemed refundable under established guidelines.
Responding to questions about whether Adani had sought reimbursement for wider preliminary costs or early-stage investments, the Minister reiterated that only refundable amounts will be returned.
The Sustainable Energy Authority has been instructed to conduct a detailed assessment to determine the precise sums eligible for reimbursement, with transparency and compliance to legal protocols identified as key priorities.
