Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala acknowledged on Monday that the government has failed to deliver a level of service that meets public expectations, citing the growing number of shootings and violent crimes across the country.

“Shootings are happening everywhere. Whether it’s organised crime or other forms of violence, these lead to the loss of lives and property. The responsibility of the police is to suppress these crimes and ensure people can live peacefully,” the Minister said, speaking at a meeting held at the Mahiyanganaya Divisional Secretariat Auditorium.

Wijepala admitted that many citizens have lost faith in law enforcement, with some even sending him WhatsApp messages asking, “Are the police sleeping?”

He stressed the urgent need to deliver justice without delay, warning that a failure to act decisively would only lead to further tragic consequences.
