Minister of Power Kumara Jayakody told parliament on Thursday (09) it will take a minimum of three years to reduce the electricity tariffs.

Responding to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, he said the government didn’t promise an immediate reduction.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is presently Rs. 332 billion in debt and the people have to suffer for the corruption committed by the previous regime, the minister said.

Jayasekara claimed Anura Kumara Dissanayake promised a 35 per cent electricity tariff reduction within a short period before he was elected the president.

But, his government now says a reduction is not possible until June, he charged and questioned the reasons for that postponement.

He claimed the CEB has earned profits of Rs. 167 billion, after having depended on the cheaper hydropower for more than 56 percent of the generation.
