NBRO urges vigilance as landslides can occur at any alert level

Areas placed under level one and level two landslide warnings remain at risk of slope failures and related hazards, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) said.

Senior geologist Wasantha Senadeera said that landslide warnings are issued in three stages based on recorded rainfall levels, but stressed that landslides can occur at any stage once an alert has been issued.

He said red notices indicate a heightened risk of major landslides, while areas under lower-level warnings may still experience embankment failures, rock falls and slope collapses.

Senadeera urged residents to remain vigilant in known high-risk locations, including Galboda, Diyanilla, Weeriyapura and Udapatha, and to take precautionary measures when warnings are in effect.
