Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe has revealed that around 900,000 families in Sri Lanka are currently without homes, highlighting a growing national concern over affordable housing and urban poverty.

The Minister said that approximately 100,000 new families join the homeless population each year, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable housing development and expanded social support mechanisms.

Dr. Ranasinghe said that the government has launched several housing programs aimed at helping low-income families achieve home ownership.

He added that plans are underway to broaden existing housing assistance schemes, enabling families who are unable to construct their own homes to access greater financial and technical support.
