Not the hotel, only fence on tank resevoir – Lal Kantha

Minister of Agriculture K. D. Lalkantha has reaffirmed the government’s resolve to remove unauthorized constructions on tank reserves, stating that enforcement will apply equally, regardless of social or political stature.

Speaking at a public event in Monaragala, he addressed growing speculation about a hotel owned by businessman Dudley Sirisena in Polonnaruwa.

The controversy has sparked debate on social media, with critics challenging the government to demonstrate impartiality in its crackdown on illegal encroachments.

“We’ve already begun removing unauthorized structures in Anuradhapura, starting with Nuwara Wewa. Once the process begins in Polonnaruwa, we will look into the concerns raised regarding Mr. Sirisena’s hotel,” Lal Kantha said.

Responding to calls for transparency, Minister Lal Kantha encouraged Dudley Sirisena to publicly declare his willingness to relinquish any land under the Irrigation Department’s control, should it be found to be in breach of regulations.

However, Minister Lal Kantha clarified that initial assessments suggest the hotel itself is not constructed within the official boundaries of the Polonnaruwa lake.

“According to the information I have, the land has been leased from the Tourist Board. But there is a fence that extends into tank reserve land, and if any removal is required, it would likely be limited to that fenced area,” he added.
