The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has announced a wide-ranging probe into the assets of senior officials across major government institutions, including Sri Lanka Customs, the Department of Immigration and Emigration, the Police, the Tri-Forces, and the Prisons Department.
According to the Bribery Commission, internal investigations have already begun into some officers following complaints linking them to organised criminal networks.
A senior CIABOC official emphasized that the decision to act swiftly comes in response to repeated allegations concerning misconduct among senior personnel.
While CIABOC routinely reviews annual asset and liability declarations of government officials, this inquiry will go further to examine potential corruption-related offences beyond the declarations.
The first phase will focus on top-ranking officers in the Police and Tri-Services, with plans to expand the investigation to lower-ranking personnel in due course.
The Commission also revealed that additional government agencies generating public revenue will be monitored in subsequent phases.
To manage the scope of this inquiry, CIABOC is preparing to hire additional staff on a contractual basis, ensuring sufficient capacity to carry out its mandate effectively.
