A total of 944 road traffic accidents have been reported across the country in the first five months of 2025, resulting in 1,007 deaths, according to the latest figures released by the Sri Lanka Police.

Speaking at a press briefing held today, Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manatunga, said the alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for stronger road safety enforcement and public awareness.

Police have intensified islandwide operations targeting drunk driving and reckless road behaviour, which remain key contributors to the rising number of accidents.

From January 1 to May 18, authorities have apprehended 26,413 drivers for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

“These operations are part of our broader strategy to minimise traffic fatalities and ensure public safety. Drivers must understand that irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel puts countless lives at risk, including their own,” SSP Manatunga said.
