Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manathunga has addressed the controversy surrounding a widely circulated photograph of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, taken during his detention.
The image, which spread across social media, did not originate from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or any police officer, according to SSP Manathunga.
In a statement to the media, SSP Manathunga clarified that the photograph was taken by a friend or another individual present at the time of Rajapaksa’s detention at the Beliatta Expressway checkpoint.
He emphasized that the image was not linked to official law enforcement channels.
Addressing concerns about the handling of Rajapaksa during the arrest, SSP Manathunga noted that the use of handcuffs is not mandatory for all suspects.
The decision lies with the officer in charge and is based on the suspect’s behavior at the time of the arrest.
Manathunga further assured that the officers involved acted according to legal procedures, stressing that no political influence had interfered with the case.
The statement comes in response to growing speculation on social media about the circumstances of Rajapaksa’s arrest and the release of the image.
