Two officials from a Hindu temple in northern Sri Lanka have been questioned by the Counter Terrorism and Investigation Division (CTID) over alleged links to the defunct LTTE.
Selvathurai Shashikumar, head of the committee at the Adi Lingeswara Kovil on Vedukkunari mountain, and former secretary Thurairasa Thamilchelvan were summoned to the CTID’s Vavuniya office on 9 October.
Shashikumar was questioned for nearly two hours, according to Thamilchelvan, who also faced inquiries.
Speaking to the media, Thamilchelvan said he was asked whether he had any connections with the LTTE, which he denied outright.
He said that police also questioned him about his resignation from the temple committee, to which he explained that membership rotates every two years.
Thamilchelvan stated that officers informed him the investigation into the Kovil was being carried out on “an order from the top.”
Condemning the questioning, he described it as an attempt to intimidate the temple community, adding that “attempts to silence us will not succeed.”
